Community Profile

The Borough of Middletown is located in south central Pennsylvania, and sits along the banks of the Susquehanna River to the south of Harrisburg and Hershey, Pa. The borough’s electric system serves approximately 4,300 meters. The borough prides itself on providing the community with outstanding services.

Middletown’s origins date to the mid-1700s. It was originally chosen as a site of settlement by William Penn and was officially founded in 1755. During the Revolutionary War, Middletown served as an important supply depot and boat-building center for the Continental Army. In 1828, the borough was legally incorporated following a period of rapid growth and development that resulted from construction of the Union Canal, which helped to connect Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and emerging markets in the Midwest. Middletown is the birthplace of J. Milton Dyer, a famous American architect who operated out of Cleveland. Dyer was responsible for the design of Cleveland City Hall, as well as the Herrick Memorial Library in Wellington and Lake County Courthouse in Painesville. Middletown is also the hometown of Ben Olsen, a former professional soccer player and current head coach of the Houston Dynamo.

Middletown has a long tradition of service, a strong leadership team and a well-managed public power system.

Public Power and AMP

Public power utilities are not-for-profit, community-owned electric systems that work to provide the highest-quality, most reliable power to residents and businesses. They are part of the communities and focus on what is best for the people and businesses they serve.

American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) is the nonprofit wholesale power supplier and services provider for more than 130 Members in the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, as well as the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation, a joint action agency with nine Delaware municipal members. Combined, these Member municipal electric utilities serve approximately 650,000 customers. AMP Members receive their power supply from a diversified resource mix that includes wholesale power purchases through AMP and the open market and energy produced at AMP and Member-owned generating facilities utilizing fossil fuel, hydroelectric, solar, wind, and other renewable resources.
