Community Profile

Located on U.S. Routes 119 and 250 in the north central portion of West Virginia, Philippi is an attractive and progressive community. Less than one-half hour from Interstate 79, our community is quite accessible. Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland are all within a 2 hour drive. One can reach Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 2 hours; Charleston, West Virginia, in 2 ½ hours; and Washington, D.C. in 4 hours. For those longer commutes, the Philippi/Barbour County Regional Airport offers a 3200’ runway.

While accessible to larger metropolitan areas, our community remains a safe, quiet place to raise a family. We are a place where everyone knows one another and people feel comfortable taking a walk through town.

Philippi offers good education – from preschool through college. Students attend Philippi Elementary and Middle Schools within the City. Philip Barbour High School is just south of the City. The Barbour County Vocational Center also offers an array of training opportunities for youth and adults. We are fortunate to have Alderson-Broaddus College, a Baptist-affiliated four-year liberal arts college, within the community for those who wish to further their education while staying at home. West Virginia University at Morgantown is also available within an hour’s drive.

Though we are a small city, we offer many amenities. Philippi owns and operates its own electric distribution, broadband fiber, and television cable systems. In addition, we are home to many recreational and leisure time activities. The Philippi City Building includes a gymnasium, youth center, and meeting places. The city-owned Dayton Park includes picnic areas, a swimming pool, playground, and basketball court. Other playgrounds and recreational facilities also exist in Philippi including tennis, basketball, baseball, archery, weightlifting, and racquetball, etc. Fishing is available south of the City at Teter Lake, while whitewater rafting is available at various rivers in the area. Restaurants and accommodations are also available.
