Community Profile

Wampum, Pennsylvania, is a small borough within Lawrence County, less than 30 minutes from the Pennsylvania/Ohio border. Our community may be small, but our location is easily accessible to the larger world. We have accessibility to Interstates 76 (10 minute commute), Interstate 79 and Interstate 80 (approximately 25 minute commutes). These highways bring metropolitan areas and larger markets within easy reach. Pittsburgh is just 49 minutes southeast, while Youngstown, Ohio, is 40 minutes northwest. Also, easily within a two hour drive, are the cities of Erie, Pennsylvania; and Akron and Cleveland, Ohio.

While we may be small, we offer many amenities and strive to keep your costs low. We own and operate a municipal electric system, whereby our citizens have part-ownership, elect representatives to the board, and can participate in their open meetings. Any issues with the electric system are dealt with locally by local personnel. We are members of American Municipal Power (AMP), a wholesale provider and service agency for municipal electric systems in six states. With their assistance, we are able to provide our customers with a diverse mix of electric energy at an economical price.

The Ellwood City Area School District provides education for our youth. For those wishing to further their education, there are several colleges/universities close to home. Within an hour’s drive, one may choose from Geneva College, Slippery Rock University, Youngstown StateUniversity, Grove City College, Robert Morris College, University of Pittsburgh, or the Community College of Allegheny County.

When the day is done, everyone needs a place to relax. You can spend a quiet, peaceful evening on your front porch without the noise of traffic, and the hustle and bustle of metropolitan areas. If looking for recreation, our region offers so much more than the traditional parks. We are a land of history, culture, and outdoor activities. You can enjoy museums and the arts; or, the outdoor enthusiast can enjoy an array of water sports, fishing, hiking and biking trails, skiing, hunting, golfing, and more. Even the shores of Lake Erie are within two hours.

We are a land of opportunity waiting for you. Come visit us and let us show you what our borough has to offer you.
