Member Profile

The Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation, Inc. (DEMEC) is a public power joint action agency and wholesale electric utility established in 1979 to provide power supply and related services to nine municipally owned distribution utilities in the state of Delaware through owned generation assets and power purchased from other generators in the PJM region.

Members of DEMEC are the cities and towns of Clayton, Lewes, Middletown, Milford, New Castle, Newark, Seaford and Smyrna. Collectively, they serve over 135,000 residents and businesses, offering demand response and energy efficiency programs to help customers save energy and money. In total DEMEC’s Members have a peak load over 470 Megawatts (MW). DEMEC is a generation owner and the PJM Load Serving Entity (“LSE”) for eight of these municipal utilities and provides 100 percent of their wholesale power supply requirements. We joined AMP in 2011 with the opportunity to participate in generation projects undertaken by the organization, such as the AMP Fremont Energy Center where DEMEC owns 115 MW of the 675 MW facility.

DEMEC, like other public power systems across the nation, is a leader in the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the communities we serve. DEMEC has provided green energy products to its members since 2004, well before the Delaware Renewable Portfolio Standard became law. Our goal of developing innovative and economic utility-scale, renewable energy generation projects include over 26 MW of in-state solar generation, like the Milford Solar Park (15 MW) and 69 MW of wind energy from the Laurel Hill Wind Farm.

Our communities offer nationally recognized reliable and responsible power supply, quick, one-stop permitting, beautiful settings, accessible highways and transportation, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and much more.
