Community Profile

Nestled among the rolling hills of southeast Ohio, Woodsfield is the county seat of Monroe County. We are 35 minutes south of Interstate 70 and 45 minutes east of Interstate 77. These thoroughfares provide quality transportation throughout the area. Columbus, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Charleston, West Virginia can all be reached in 2-3 hours. Our location puts us within 12 hours of most of the United States east of the Mississippi. Pittsburgh International Airport is an approximate 2 hour commute; however, Monroe County Airport in Woodsfield provides some chartered flights. Just 25 minutes from Woodsfield lays the Ohio River which provides low-cost bulk transportation.

Our community provides economical and reliable municipal utility services including water, sewer and electric distribution. Citizens have a direct impact on these operations as they elect members to the board/council, and are able to attend their open meetings. If there is a problem, you deal with people locally in Woodsfield, not some far distant location.

Students attend Woodsfield Elementary School and Monroe Central High School or Swiss Hills Career Center, all in Woodsfield. These schools are all a part of the Switzerland of Ohio School District which encompasses three high schools, the career center, and six elementary schools. Within an hour’s drive, one may choose to continue their education at Belmont Technical College in St. Clairsville; or in just over an hour’s commute, attend Muskingum College in New Concord or West Virginia University at Parkersburg.

Our area abounds with parks and recreational opportunities. Wayne National Forest and the Monroe Lake and Wildlife Area are an outdoorsman’s delight – hunting, fishing, and camping. Fishing is enjoyed at the Little Muskingum River and Sunfish Creek as well. Several golf courses, swimming pools, and tennis courts can also be found throughout Monroe County.

Picturesque surroundings, highway accessibility, municipal services, and recreational opportunities – we’ve got it all! Due to our landscape and the influence of Swiss immigrants, some refer to us as the Switzerland of Ohio. Come see for yourself. Give us a call and we will be glad to show you what we have to offer.
