Business Retention and Expansion Services
Learn how AMP helps public power communities foster business growth, expansion and long-term success through efforts that support business retention and expansion.

What Is a Business Retention and Expansion Program and Why Does It Matter?
American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) and its Members recognize that the majority of new jobs and capital investment created in the AMP footprint come from existing businesses: According to the International Economic Development Council, up to 80 percent of new jobs and capital investments come from existing businesses.
Through its economic development program, AMP provides business retention and expansion services to its Members, and these services are designed to help existing businesses stay, grow and invest in a community. AMP supports these efforts through site selection assistance, workforce and incentive resources, business intelligence tools, marketing, lead generation, and direct economic development support.
As the nonprofit services provider for 130+ public power communities in 9 states, AMP is positioned to dedicate these resources toward business and expansion services to help support economic growth in public power communities.
Why Existing Businesses Drive the Economy
Existing businesses are the backbone of local economies. They create jobs, invest capital, support local suppliers, and generate tax revenue. Because most economic growth comes from companies that are already operating in a community, AMP’s Economic Development Program includes business retention and expansion services that help local employers grow, remain competitive, and continue investing in Member communities.
AMP’s Unique Position as a Business Retention and Expansion Partner
AMP is uniquely positioned to support business retention and expansion. AMP services more than 130 Member municipal electric systems, giving it direct relationships with community leaders, utility managers, economic developers and electric officials across its nine-state Member footprint. Reliable, affordable electricity is often one of the most important factors in a company’s decision to expand or remain in a community. As a wholesale power supplier and utility services provider, AMP can help Member communities communicate the value of public power, electric reliability, energy efficiency opportunities, and other utility-related advantages that impact a company’s bottom line.
AMP’s Business Retention and Expansion Services
AMP dedicates significant resources toward delivering value-added services to businesses already thriving or looking to expand within Member communities. Through strategic monthly outreach to about 4,000 site selection, real estate and development firms/professionals, AMP’s economic development efforts are forward focused to best help Member communities achieve their respective economic development goals and to retain and support the business expansion of existing companies already located in their communities.

Within those communities, businesses in public power communities in the AMP Member footprint have access to the skilled workforce in those communities, strong infrastructure, access to local decision-makers, and more.
How does AMP’s business retention program help with workforce challenges?
AMP’s business retention services help communities address workforce challenges by connecting local businesses with workforce resources, data, and development opportunities that support recruitment, retention and expansion efforts. How are AMP’s business retention and expansion services different from a typical economic development program?
AMP’s Economic Development Program, which includes business retention and expansion services, differs from other economic development programs because it is utility-driven and community-focused. AMP’s program leverages the resources and relationships of a public power provider to support its Member communities. Rather than serving as a standalone economic development agency, AMP acts as a regional partner that helps Member communities attract, retain, and expand businesses while highlighting the advantages of public power. AMP’s economic development program goes beyond traditional economic development by combining business attraction, retention, workforce support, site selection expertise, data analytics, and utility-specific services to help public power communities compete for investment and job growth.
