Community Profile
Situated in Lorain County on State Route 2, Amherst, Ohio, has much to offer. Excellent community services and safety forces, a revitalized downtown, parks, and accessibility are just some of what brings people to Amherst. We are just 3 minutes from Interstates 80/90 (Ohio Turnpike), less than 15 minutes from Lake Erie, and approximately 30 minutes from Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport. With nearby thoroughfares, metropolitan areas such as Columbus, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, can all be driven within 2 ¼ – 2 ¾ hours.
The City maintains its own municipal electric, water, and sewer services, which allows any issues with these utilities to be resolved locally. We have maintained our historic downtown through Main Street Amherst. The Amherst Historical Society also works to protect and preserve our city’s heritage.
Amherst is home to one of the Lorain County Metro Parks – 72-acre Beaver Creek Reservation. In addition to 65 acres of woodlands, the park offers a paved trail, picnic shelter, playground, soccer field, and a visitor’s center. Four other parks: DePaola, Jaworski, the Lorain County Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Maude Neiding, which has a community swimming pool, are located in our community.
Students are served by one of Ohio’s “excellent” school districts – Amherst Exempted Village School District. St. Joseph Catholic School also provides outstanding academics, while stressing family values. Oberlin College and Lorain County Community College are within a 15 minute commute.
Our community is blessed with diverse businesses ranging from manufacturing to a retail business district. Great things happen in Amherst! Come see for yourself.
